QOTD December 30

Question of the Day

QOTD December 30

Postby DeniseM » Dec 30th, '14, 10:48 am

What is your favorite sound?

I heard someone talking about sound on a podcast and they asked this question. Without hesitation the first thing that came to mind was the sound of waves on cobblestones. The knock knock knock sound the stones make when the wave recedes. I can close my eyes and almost hear/feel it. I lived on Block Island for 4 years and there was a cobblestone beach that I would go to. Little piece of heaven.

Oh, that is so cool, Denise--so specific and nostalgic. There is a certain smell of a specific dirt I played in one time in Pacifica, CA where I grew up. It is so elusive and rare that I will get a whiff of it, even when I visit there, but I love it, and it brings back all kinds of warm feelings.

As for sounds, I love the sound of waves on the California shore, mixed with the distant cries of seagulls. Heaven to me.

My mom has told me that she loves the sound of pages turning, and has instructed me that if she is ever in a coma ( ??? ) to just sit at her bedside and slowly flip through a book or magazine, and she will come back.

I'm not sure I've heard waves on cobblestones, I'm sure it's heavenly.

I love the sounds of the ocean: the wind, waves, and birds - so relaxing!

Singing birds in the winter, when the sun is coming back. Mostly these two:

That's a tough one.

I love the sound when I wake to the noise of the coffee grinding in the morning. I know Ade is already making coffee.

Does money in the bank make a sound?

Just kidding!

I also love the sound of waves on cobblestones. Jasper Beach in Maine was heavenly. I love hearing birds chirp. That has to be one of my favorite sounds. Except when it's at 5 o'clock in the morning! I love the sound of my boys laughing. :)

I have never heard the sound of waves on cobblestones. All the beaches I have known were very sandy or solid coral/rock with tide pools.

I love the sound of my son's laughter. It's very infectious.Even if I don't think something is funny, it makes me laugh.

I could sit for hours and listen to the waves on Lake Michigan. No matter the season. I took a 45 second video of waves in March one year and I played it over and over on my phone.

I love the crackle and pop of a wood fire. I feel warm just thinking about it.

My favourite sound is definitely waves on a beach. I've only heard waves on a pebble beach once, it was very cool. Would love to hear waves on cobblestones - I imagine it would be a deeper sound.

My other favourite sound is a baby laughing. We used to do all sorts of things to hear Eric laugh when he was a baby.

I thought you might be interested in this pod cast about silence.
It's from Krista Tippit's On Being.

It's about Gordon Hempton who records sounds in nature.

My favorite sound is 'silence'. It's so rare and hard to come upon in my life at this stage.

I also love, love the sound of voices in harmony. When we were with family we sang carols and just the sound of voices that blend it is one of my favorites.
I will have to click that link you shared, Denise. I thought at first it was from 'Kara Tippetts' whose blog I've been following as she was just placed on hospice.

Sweet how sounds evoke such memories!

I'm still listening to the link you posted- love it! Such interesting thoughts and some beautiful sounds of 'silence' too.

It made me think of a blogpost I wrote after experiencing a powerful "moment of silence". You can read it here if you like- I still love to carve out "quiet time". So nice!
