FALL CROP 2013: Anna's Art Class

Anna - this is so fun!

Oddly enough I picked up 2 Sharpie Poster paint pens this week too - White and Gold - BUT I just noticed that they are "oil based"?? Should I use them? Any cautions /tips - I didn't even look closely when I got them - hmmm....oil=messy cleanup to me!

When the black gesso was dry, I outlined the silhouette, using both the white and the light blue pens (the Sharpie and the Posca). I didn't try to follow the edge and create a perfect line, but rather tried to make my outline a bit "messy" (without giving her too many strange bumps to her forehead!) I went all the way around twice with the white pen and one time with the blue.

Anna, I just got caught up, this is fabulous! I never knew I could make a silhouette so simply (and lovely)!

Thank you Karen!

Hm, I don't really know much about the pen you got. I'm so sorry, I didn't know there were 2 versions! I tried to google and I found this info:

Permanent oil-based paint marker.
•Marks opaque and glossy on light and dark surfaces
•Use on virtually any surface: metal, pottery, wood, rubber, glass, plastic, stone, and more - Quick-drying. Resistant to water, fading, and abrasion
•Available in 8 vibrant colors for light and dark surfaces
•AP Certified
•Xylene free

Reading this makes me think that you can probably use it, but I haven't tried it and I'm not 100% sure. But it says that it is quick-drying and that sounds good. :)

At this point, it's a good idea to take a step back and to look at the canvas! :) What else does the background need? More paint? Other colours? More scibbles?

I decided that I wanted to add some more stamping. I added some just to the left of the silhouette, at the bottom of the canvas, and also at the top, above the stenciled image. I also coloured them in, using the Faber Castell pen.

Now… we have come to the fun (and slightly scary) part of writing on top of the silhouette! :D

I tried my pen on a piece of scrap paper before starting and then I just took a deep breath and went for it. A whole piece of text often looks so much better than a single word or a single line, so when I’m writing, I’m trying not to worry but to just move on. If you don’t like the idea of using descriptive words, you could for example write a poem, a favourite quote or some lines from a song.

Other ideas, if you don't want to do the writing at all, could be stamping, sewing or just drawing patterns on top of the silhouette!

I made my text go slightly outside the silhouette too and I made it a bit difficult to read, on purpose. :)

To finish my canvas I then added a few decorations. I added a piece of lace, and a clothes pin from the Milky Way add on. I also added a golden leave and some of the wood veneers, plus some candy dots from the main kit.

Thank you for the info Anna! I was concerned with the chemicals and drying - sounds like it won't be a huge problem!

Love the final product!! I just got a great idea and hope to play this afternoon!

I love this! I too made it for my daughter. Unfortunately, I cut it out weird and she looks really odd in silhouette, so I will be remaking mine. But I love love love this!

did you have a hard time writing with the sharpie? I found it to splatter a little.

Thank you! I hope the you'll be happy with how the silhouette turns out if you redo it.

My sharpie didn't splatter, but I do recognize what you describe! I wonder if they are perhaps more likely to do that when they're new? Hopefully any white splatters will only add to the fabulousness of the canvas, instead of being a problem! :)
