FALL CROP 2013: Challenge #1 from Emily

FALL CROP 2013: Challenge #1 from Emily

Postby mlepitts » Nov 1st, '13, 4:00 pm

First challenge of the crop!

How I came up with my challenge: I was looking at pictures of Farmer's Markets and one showed a butternut squash cut open. I saw the seeds. I started humming to myself, "Sowing the seeds of love..." and then thought, "SOWING! That could be a challenge, I like to sew, I finally moved my sewing machine back to my scraproom, I could have people SEW on a layout!" And there you have it, that's how my challenge relates to the crop theme. :)

But I'm going to have to be more specific, because I like specific challenges.

Sewing could mean machine stitching, hand stitching, or faux stitching of any kind, including in the product design.

First, I want you to sew on your title. You could sew on, like have a title block and stitch it to the page, or you sew on, like add some stitching so part of your title is created with stitching.

Secondly, I'd like you to use this as inspiration and add some of these stitches to your design, the more creative the better (if you don't hand stitch, you could cut something out that LOOKED like one of these stitches or use a punch or bling to make the "french knot," lots of ways to interpret this creatively)!

Third, add some loose thread to your page. It doesn't matter how, I just want to see some texture created from some free flowing threads. Don't snip the ends from your machine stitching too neatly, add a nest of thread, think outside the box. This is the hard part of the challenge for me, but I will let go of my orderly chaotic method and try it. Twine counts.

And number four, I'd like to see at least two varieties of stitching on your page, mix and match any of the techniques listed above.

When you post your layout to the gallery, please give me a list of 1-4 explaining what you did for each part of the challenge, that will help me with my viewing of the entrants immensely!!!

I'm excited to see all the loveliness that will be created from the crop, thank you for joining us!

All Entries must be new creations to be eligible for the prize. Make sure you upload your creation to the Cocoa Daisy Gallery with CHALLENGE #1 in the title. After you have uploaded your project, please link your creation to this Challenge thread, so we know you've completed the challenge.

You have until November 8th, 8pm Eastern to complete the challenges you wish to participate in. Challenge Winners will be announced later that week!

Here are some awesome examples from my teammates Sharmaine, Denise, and Jaime:

Aw, love the subject of your layout, Em, and how you worked your original inspo at the Farmers Market by mentioning buying tomatoes in your journaling.

Fun challenge!! I've been wanting to incorporate hand stitching into my pages, so this is a perfect push to get me to try!

The tomatoes bit? Yah, I wish I'd been that clever Lisa ;) But yes, it is brilliant isn't it?!!?!?!

I LOVED doing the handstitching, it was the leaving of loose threads that about killed me. I might just snip them off when I put this in a book, but maybe not. I had to have a challenge part to challenge me. That was it!

That inspiration piece is gorgeous! I think my favourite part of your layout is the hand stitched title.

It was really fun to do, I love the title best too! And Sharmaine, loose threads are easy for you, they made me nervous, but I like them! A lot! I'm glad you had fun :) I love your stitching around the designs on the paper.

Working away! The loose thread part is going to work perfectly for me on my page- helping to cover a not so great part of my photo. ;)

Just stabbed myself stitching the title. Do we get points for drawing blood?? Might add some color!
