Materials:
-a 6x6 or 8x8 canvas (or cardboard or paper if you prefer, you can also work in a journal if you like)
-a 4x6 photo of someone and it should be a portrait in profile, preferrably printed on some kind of heavier paper or cardstock, my "someone" is my daughter Alva and I'm creating my canvas for her
-any kind of liquid glue, matte medium or mod podge
-patterned paper (I'm only using one piece, slightly smaller than the canvas)
-white gesso
-black gesso or black acrylic paint (preferably matte)
-a white sharpie poster paint pen, or a white posca pen or any other white pen that writes on top of the black paint
-stamps (any background stamps you love)
-black ink (permanent/water proof)
-other decos of your choice

optionally:
-other paints or mists of your choice (I used some Glimmer Glam)
-posca pen in other colours
-spray bottle with water
-Faber Castell Pitt Artist pens, brush tip (in a matching colour)

Don't forget to wear your play clothes for this class :)

I can only imagine how awesome this project is going to be!

Anna, do you suggest the photo be black and white?
I have a stash of 8x10 canvases--will that size be ok?

Thank you so much! I'm looking forward to it! :)

It doesn't matter at all... it doesn't have to be very high quality. It's more like we're using it as a tool... ;)

I have a stash of 8x10 canvases--will that size be ok?

Oh, yes you can! Perhaps using a slightly larger photo may be a good idea when you canvas is larger.

(As long as the photo fits the canvas, you'll be fine, but I used a 8x8 canvas and a 4x6 photo and if I was to make another one today I would have used a slightly larger photo or a slightly smaller canvas. But it's not crucial.)

I hope that helps! :)

The white one is so much more common, so I don't think that's strange at all Laura. :) I've had my black jar for a while but I haven't used it that much. But for some projects it's really good!

I think I've got everything I need for this, allowing for substitutions -- maybe not the black paint, though, so I'll pick some up. (Thank goodness for stash -- next year, when I have to leave 3/4 of my stash behind when we move to Africa, it won't be as easy!) I might have to take a portrait in profile, though, which means my most frequent photo victim, er, subject, aka my daughter Sara, will most likely be featured.

Carmen.

I really hope to be able to participate in this class! I didn't know there was black gesso either. I also don't know what a posca pen is? (guess I could google it but someone else might be wondering too).

Thank you for asking! :) A Posca pen is a marker with water-based pigment ink that is waterproof and writes on most surfaces. They are very opaque and very good at covering. I love the "ultra-fine" ones for scribbling and mark making.

As I understand it the sharpie poster paint and the posca pens are the same type of pens. (There are probably differences, but to me they are very much alike :) .)

I'm intrigued. I have black paint but have been wanting to play with black gesso for some time, so your class may be my excuse to visit an art store this week. ;)

I don't either, but would mixing the black paint with white gesso be okay?

I think you'll do just fine with the black acrylic paint! :) You have to be able to write on top of it, that's why gesso or matte paint is good. A Sharpie poster paint or a Posca pen should work just fine on top of glossy acrylics too, and I'm sure there are other pens out there that works too. I hope that helps! :)
