Pocket Letters

Come here to talk about all things scrapbooking!

Pocket Letters

Postby SuzannaL » Jan 7th, '16, 2:13 pm

Explain this to me please, ladies.

I read Janette Lain's definition and I get what they are but I don't get the why. The logical thinker in me doesn't understand what you do with these things once you have received them. They really can't be "showcased" as ATC's can. The card sizes are smaller than PL/pocket scrapping... You probably spend a fair amount of $$ in putting it together and shipping. They look lovely! But what's the purpose? Enlighten me please!

Do any of you pocket letter?

I have always thought it was such a fun concept and would love to do a pocket letter swap. I really want to get back into sending mail, and who doesn't like to receive it? I guess I never thought about pocket size and just assumed that I would use a standard 12x12 PL pocket page. I envision it as filling the pockets with cute product that you have extras of and a friend doing the same. But really, I haven't investigated all that much so don't know what I'm talking about! Ha!

I don't really get pocket letters either.

if I received a pocket letter, I think I would probably absorb it into my project life/ditl album, either as a whole, or pull the pieces out and put them into my pages.

when I get a handmade card, sometimes I put it into my pocket pages, or I make a little spiral notebook using my bind-it-all.

Oh, darn, Suzanna! I thought that you were posting to enlighten US! Lol! ;)

I had the same impression as Doris, that it is a cute way to swap products and little niceties with a pen pal/pocket letter pal. I think the format serves a couple of purposes: a creative activity for the sender to decide what to send and to make a lovely presentation; and it sets a limit to the kind (shape, size) and amount of things to include.

Looking forward to Katherine setting us straight!

I'm curious too. I've seen them, but I don't really get it. However, I think the concept is kind of cool if you were to vacation with somebody, and then swapped pocket pages to add to your album.

Well, I'm no expert, but I've actually received one! :D

It was an 8.5x11, accordion folded to fit in a business-sized envelope (it was the 9-pocket version). To me, it was another cool way to send (and receive) a card/letter full of scrappy wonderfulness to look at. Some pockets had pretty paper, some pockets held journaling (the "letter" part of it), and some held stamped/embellished squares. I posted it with the other cards I received and eventually threw it away as more cards came in (I rotate through them... so fun to look at and enjoy and reread, but I can't keep everything).

So, if you think about it like you think about a card... and can find the right size page/envelope, maybe it would be fun to try. Thinking about it again... I'm going to give it a whirl.

Great question, because now I'm playing with paper! LOL

So, were I to organize a pocket letter swap, who would be in? It might something fun to do for Feb, the month of love.

I am guessing here, having never participated before, that things would go somewhat like this;
- sign up/commit to sending out one pocket letter
- random draw to determine who each person will send a letter to
- create your pocket letter in a 9x9 baseball card 8.5x11 (ish) pocket page (based on the "love" theme?)
- send to the person randomly assigned to you with the idea that it will arrive on/before Feb 14th
Sound about right?

We won't know unless we try it, right?! So, whose in?!

I don't get it really either but it does look like fun and let's be honest, we always can use a reason to use up all our stuff!!

The only thing holding me back is the limitation on the pocket page. I don't think i have any 8.5" ones and since I don't use them, I'd have to buy. If we could just use any pocket page, that would be good.

Just to be clear, I think the idea is to send some things the person could use in scrapbooking or cardmaking, correct?

So far there are 6 of us (I'm including you Scrappin'Kathy - I sent you a pm);
SuzannaL
Savi

I'll leave it open for others to see and opt to participate until this coming Monday when I will draw names and announce them here. Please then pm your snail mail addy to whom ever is sending you your pocket letter.

Oh, and page protector size is not 9x9 but rather 3x3 (three rows of 3 columns for a total of 9 pockets) and roughly 8.5x11 sized.

I think you can just pick those up at Walmart. They are the same thing used for baseball card collecting. super cheap.

Re: Pocket Letters

Postby SuzannaL » Jan 11th, '16, 1:26 pm

Alright ladies so there are 8 of us participating is this Pocket Letter exchange. I drew names for who you are creating and sending your pocket letter to.

Creator / Recipient;
Ashli / TerryB
TerryB / Suzanna
DeniseM / Ashli
Deblew / Scrappin'Kathy
Scrappin' Kathy/Doris
Doris / DeniseM
Savi / Deblew
Suzanna / Savi

For clarity; Ashli will create a pocket letter to send to TerryB.

Basic guidelines;
1. Feb/love themed items to be included
2. Baseball card protector pages are to be used that hold 9 cards (3 rows of 3)
3. Please plan on having your pocket letter arrive before or around Valentine's day, this gives you a month
4. Please pm your snail mail address to the person who will me mailing you your pocket letter
5. Have fun!

I found this from Janette (the founder of Pocket Letters) that you might find useful/helpful;
http://janettelane.blogspot.com/2015/02 ... guide.html
Along those guidelines I personally will omit the pocket letter explanation as we are all figuring it out together and the tea... Do as you see fit, it's supposed to be a fun, creative endeavor!

Did I miss anything? Feel free to chime in!
