Cameo silhouette - Yay or Nay????

Postby Funky Fairy » Feb 2nd, '15, 2:52 pm

So lovely scrappy friends.
As the subject says, what do you think?

I have a big birthday coming up and I'm wondering if it's worth putting this on my list?
I'm worried I won't use it just like the other electric cutters I've owned.
Is it easy to set up and to use?
Do you recommend buying anything else with it?

Thanks.

I haven't bought one exactly for that reason. More money for something I won't use

For me personally, it is the ONE big ticket item I use on a regular basis. It is very simple to use and the possibilities with it are endless and limited only by your imagination. The key for me to using it on a regular basis is that it is set up and ready to go just to the right of my computer. It gets prime real estate on my scrap area, as do my printers. I think that is why it gets used so frequently. I like that there are no cartridges to store and I can create my own designs or purchase from store if I want to, when I want to, ala carte. I also love that so many share free downloads to use (I have done that as well) and that the Silhouette store has a free design to download every week.
So yeah, I am sold on it.
*sorry for any enabling.

I bought mine a year ago, and although I don't use it as much as I thought I would, I do love it. I still haven't taken the time to learn all about it, but I think I still will a little at a time. However Lisa, for you and your job, and think it would be great. I bought the Portrait which was less expensive than the Cameo. It does the same thing, but I'm limited to 8.5 x 11 instead of 12x12. I'm ok with that.

I don't use mine enough - I need more instructions - the cut files from CD are so cute but I struggle with how to size them and crop things out and get what I want.

Maybe if I had more hands on instruction on my "machines" I too would use them more. I don't have a computer in my scrap space and would need one????

I love mine, and use it frequently. Sometimes even for things not scrapbook related -- like Super Bowl decorations! lol I also have mine set up next to my computer so it's very handy.

I know you have a papercrafting business, Lisa... wonder if you could use it for that also... and maybe get a tax write-off.. not sure how business taxes work in your country, tho.

I am asking myself the same question. I showed it to Bill and he actually could use it for his business, for many things including the vinyl cutting. He offered to buy it for his business and have me do any of the work with it that he will need. That sounds great and I have the room now that I have rearranged my room and got my tables in. My concern is that I won't be able to figure out how to use it. I am not good at computer technology. I literally get a headache from frustration trying to do anything in photo shop. Is it complicated?

I finally got the portrait as a gift for my big birthday, in December. I had the same concerns about not using it, and the technological aspect. I was excited to receive it, though. I made many things for my son's bar mitzvah using it (nothing too fancy), but I am now experiencing some technical issues (it's not cutting all the way through), and it makes me want to walk away and ignore the machine altogether. I am trying to power through and figure this out.

Which is to say that it is great fun. There is a learning curve, but there are you tube tutorials for everything. But it is also a piece of technology, which means when it's good, it's great. And when it's not--it is frustrating.

I have never used the cameo, but I just got the brother scan n cut. It is more expensive, but I went for that because I didn't want something that had to be tied to a computer to function. I am super happy with it :)

Best scrappy decision I've ever made. I use mine all the time because I can get whatever I need online at the store or Pinterest. I have a subscription to the Silhouette store, it's very worth it in my opinion.

I waited to buy something because the earlier ones seemed to not be what I'd use, you had to buy a whole cartridge, what if I didn't want anything else on that? I love that I can buy one file at a time.

I use it all the time, probably 3 or 4 times a week.

I say yes.

The larger cameo was out of my budget range. I went with the portrait instead and have been very happy. I use it for cut files and I also use the print to cut feature quite a lot for hybrid pages. I don't need the full 12x12 size as I mostly cut small die cuts and titles. If I need to learns something for it, I simply head over to you tube and can find what I need. I will say that having it on a shelf near my lap top makes it easy to use. Another reason for me to choose the smaller portrait. I just don't have desk or studio space for a larger machine.

But Emily do you think someone like me who is so tech challenged could use it? I hate to spend that much on something I just will feel so frustrated trying to use.

Denise you have said my exact concerns.
That is so me.

I can not be bothered to sit and read instructions.
I do not have a techie mind and I do not enjoy watching and reading tutorials trying to figure something out.
I want to plug in and press a button.
I get very easily frustrated with technology and it's probably the only thing that makes me loose my temper.

Yes it would be great for the business and yes it can go through the books.
I just want something that's easy to use.

@ashli- I may not be reading your post correctly, but one doesn't have to have the computer on hand to use the Silhouette. You can have images on an SD card and just work from that. (For example, if someone was going to a crop and didn't want to take computer or have access to it).
Happy you like your Brother though! Congrats!

Ah yes.... I just didn't want something that required software and such to get designs on to it. I was really attracted to how with the brother, you can write something and cut it out immediately :)

Denise, I think the hardest thing I had to figure out was how to use the cut files we produce here. Ashley wrote a very simple READ FILE that explains what to do and it was super easy. I've finally done it enough now that I can almost remember what to do without re-reading it every time.

It was seriously plug and play. I haven't ever read any instructions, there are a lot of things I don't know how to do, but I can do what I want to with a very limited amount of knowledge.

Looks like we might need a mini-class on electronic cutting here at CD????

With some challenges?
