Who here does art journaling/mixed media journaling?

Postby Jaime Warren » May 9th, '13, 7:44 pm

I'm starting my very first one and I'm a bit nervous! Anyone have any tips, or must have products? I have always loved the way they look and I would really like to create a journal with my favorite inspirational quotes to pass on to my girls ;D

Yes.
no rules, just play. If you don't like the page you can rip it out or paint over it with white gesso and start over.
You are going to make such beautiful things Jaime, you have a wonderful sense of style and color.
As far as supplies go, it's hard to say since everyone creates so differently. A big thing for me is gesso, masking tape, a good black permanent marker and some watercolors. But you might use other things more. Just experiment. :)

I've dabbled in it, but haven't gotten very far. My fav supplies are gesso, acrylic paints watered down, mists and pan pastels. Jaime, check out Julie Fei-Fan Balzer's blog. She has lots of free lessons on doing an art journal.

I do, I just don't share it because i'd rather share my scrap pages :)
My tips....
just play.
I say start with a scrap of paper, book page or tag.
Pull out your favourite colours of some paints, inks or mists.
Use a stencil if you want.
Or some texture with paste or masking tape.
Layer up some stamps.
Then journal over the top.

And the next thing is very important...
Share it!
I would love to see what you create :)

All such great advice! My 2 cents is to just play and have fun! While scrapbook pages may make you feel the need for embellishments, etc. to be placed just so, your Art Journal is more of a place of freedom to just "do". So don't be scared! And also know that there is no "right" or "wrong".

Hope you do share!

And, Sharmaine, you too!!

Thanks so much ladies!!! I have acrylic paints, but no gesso...I'm assuming I can use these straight on the paper without the gesso?

I will definitely share! ;D

I've dabbled....the freedom in it is awesome! I typically have the "no rules" mentality for scrapping too, but am a little more structured (not in a clean way :D) ..but in an art journaling....it's awesome to just let go ...there is no wrong. It's also a great way to feel out new artsy techniques too....Gesso, inks of all kinds (an addiction)...and the willingness to let my hair down and get messy are all I need ....I haven't played in a while..may have to peel open a journal :D

You are spot on Jaime :) I don't use gesso often. The page I just made uses paint, mist, washi tape, white pen and a stencil. straight onto pages in an old dictionary :)

Jaime I just like Gesso because it helps the page lie flat for all the crap I put on it. You can just use white acrylic if you want, or nothing at all.
I don't share either, I don't even know why really.

Ditto - give it a try and have fun! I use an old book and have some pages that I love and others --- not so good. The fun is I can show or not show as I see fit. i pretty much started with acrylics and watercolors, stamps and black ink pads. Gesso is not a must have at first. There are so many videos and ideas on line.

i have made a few pages in the past but would love to play again. i posted some of my pages on flickr a while back. if you are at all interested, you can find them here:

i wasn't as 'painty' then as i would like to be now...it was mostly about the words and making the little books. just enjoy the process and make it whatever you would like it to be.

Kelly, thank you so much for sharing! So inspiring!

I have never made a themed journal, but mostly mix techniques, styles and themes within my journals. I love the freedom of trying new things, or just having a good time, playing and getting messy. Sometimes I'm writing more, documenting things that I've done. Other times I just add a few words or the feeling I want to "get out" is there in the colours or patterns I'm creating.

I love gesso too, but there are so many ways to art journal and there are no musts. I sometimes use gesso as a base and I sometimes don't. I also use the gesso on top, as a white paint that doesn't fully cover what's beneath, to tone patterns down or to create some subtle effects.

I have been thinking so much about art journaling since we first started talking about Project Art. I have so many ideas and I can't wait to share more of them with you!

Also, I would love to see more of your journals - those of you who say that you normally don't share that much. :) (On the other hand, there's a freedom in not sharing and you totally have the right not to share too! :) )

I Started doing a little more playing around. I've been watching a few tutorials and just finished up a little book with a few pages that I used gesso and other techniques on. It's I good practice I think because it gets you out of that "neat" box that I'm guilty of being in sometimes. I paint a little and I'm just realizing that some of the ways I use paint could easily be used in making art journal pages. I hope to share soon.

I do! I've had such limited time to create lately and it seems I always choose scrapbooking over any other hobby. I'm hoping to get back at it when school is out for the summer.

I don't, because I have issues committing to themes. :) And sizes other than 12x12.
I do enjoy using media on my layouts. So fun to actually make something, and get messy and use texture.

I want to start and I'm crazy enough to want to include my boys in the fun. I'm going to put together a box of supplies for us to play with. I picked up some 'kid-grade' gelatos from Amazon that I though I'd start them with. They're much cheaper than the real gelatos, but the colours are simpler and more like a pack of crayons.

Lydia, that sounds like so much fun! I've been wanting to get Alva some sort of journal, but I haven't come further than thinking about it yet. Perhaps I should try to put something together before school holidays and summer, for both her and Linus... hm...

Please let us know how it goes! :)

I have been ready to start art journaling, I just need to find some creativity and time together.

When you are working on a page directly in the journal, do you put something between the next pages to protect them?
