FYI if you have an herb garden..

Postby kissy » Jul 1st, '07, 8:49 pm

never ever never ever plant mint!! They should sell that stuff with a warning attached! I just cleaned out my herb garden for the second time this season. Don't get me wrong it smells wonderful in the garden and makes a great garnish but it is so invasive, and hard to control. Next time I will just plant it in a pot! But I must say my sage and lavender are doing wonderful. The big bumblebees love the lavender and it smells heavenly.

I've heard that before. They have mint farms around here and sell mint compost. That's the only compost that smells really good in the sun!

Oh yes, Ive made that mistake before!! That stuff grew everywhere and in no time at all. Another one to watch out for is bee balm, or lemon balm. It's as invasive as mint is.

I find planting herbs in pots look great, easy to get to and easy to control  ;)

I don't have a garden, but mint in a pot sounds nice. I bet my cats would eat it though. It's related to catnip.

Hmmm.... when I saw the bit about the herb garden I thought, "Everyone should plant mint so they can indulge in mojitos all summer long!"  ANd then I saw the rest of it!  :)
It's our favorite summer drink and whenever we have guests over and offer to make them mojitos with fresh grown mint everyone loves it!  And the secret to a quick mojito (w/o making the simple syrup) is to use sprite instead, and if you want to watch your waist then diet sprite!  Yummy!!!

Maybe I should grow some mint because I KILL everything else in my garden.  The only thing thriving in my yard are the weeds!! :-\ :'( :D

Tricia, you are my mojito guru....diet sprite....I would have never thought of that and I'm a mojito freak!!  I can't wait!!  Thanks for the advice and I'm off to buy my mint plant... ;D

I would love to have your mojito recipe, Tricia. They sound great. We tend to be frozen Margarita people, but I'm always up for something new.

Let's see...
Put about 10 mint leaves in the bottom of the glass and put in crushed ice.  Then either use a muddler or the end of a wooden spoon to muddle it (bruise the mint and crush the ice a bit more).  Pour in 2 oz of white rum and the juice from 1 lime.  Fill the glass up with sprite or diet sprite, and garnish with a lime slice and mint!  Voila -- you are set for happy hour (which usually ends up being happy hour playgroup around here -- friends come over with all their tikes in tow).
Enjoy the drink and I hope you all enjoy the 4th!
