Selfies

Postby Funky Fairy » May 28th, '14, 5:04 am

Is there a secret to taking a good selfie?

I see some of you and you always look amazing.
How?? Is it just that you are naturally photogenic?
Or is there a nak?

I always end up with a double chin and one sloped eye so it looks like I'm having a stroke.
I look so dreadful.

Jody you must be the queen of selfies.
Do you have to take 100's to get 1 good one?

Please share :)

I am horrible at selfies too! I think it's practice practice practice and learning the angle to take them.

I think good lighting and looking up at the camera, as opposed to down always helps. :)

I bet you can google this! seriously.
I don't take a lot but I sheepishly admit to a few sprinkled into my IG feed! Terry is correct, look up, or at least straight ahead not down. Everyone has a double chin that way, unless your Angelina Joile. I have a sleepy eye as well in photos Lisa. I just take a couple and I usually get one where my eye doesn't look so droopy.

I have been taking selfies before they were called selfies, I love them because I can usually get a shot I like and I'm patient with the process. If I ask someone else to take a photo of me, I don't get the instant feedback that I can with a selfie, so I can't make an angle adjustment. Practice practice practice is the key. Try different angles, if you don't think your eye is cooperating, take a side shot. Try different looks, sad, contemplative, silly. I find that the best smiles are ones where I imagine laughing with my husband, that makes me laugh in real life and then I get a nice natural smile right after that.

Ha...how did you know I would click on this thread, Lisa?!

I don't know that I am the queen of selfies, nor do I think I should want to win that title! It means I am self-absorbed and into myself according to one article circulating the web. I don't like to think of myself that way- even if that is what selfies represent!

I agree with Em. Taking pictures of yourself- especially with the ease and access to iPhones and cameras/iPads these days- is fun and for sure helps you see yourself differently and learn things in that process.
I do overtake photos a lot of the time, but I also find that sometimes a single snapshot results in a great picture too! I also don't get hung up on taking the 'perfect picture', and even if I do have 10 pictures I don't always post the one that looks "best". To me that is half the fun. I also think it is a more true representation of me and life in general. I don't always have my hair done or make up on, and a lot of times I am home day after day after day, just doing what I do. So it's crazy to keep taking selfies, but I still love them and like how I see changes in myself and just enjoy sharing them with whoever likes to keep up with what I am up to at any given time.

They definitely capture my mood or what is going on in life. Like this one of me yesterday. I snapped it as I was listening to Teague and Crew chatting and I had just been cleaning the kitchen. I was wearing a stocking cap after a long, warm weekend spent by the pool at the club. It was chilly as I did my household chores, I had no make up on and yet after I snapped the picture I could see a certain contentedness in my expression. I like that.
Happy, doing chores, busy and just grateful for so many things in life in general.

I say go for it with the selfies. Free yourself to just look how you look. Take them when you are cooking in the kitchen. Or sitting at your computer. Or walking outside and see a blue, blue sky! Artists paint themselves. Writers write biographies. We can take selfies. There is no law against loving yourself. ;)
I happen to love seeing my friends the way they see themselves. Even if you all post them every day. :D

I challenge you to take at least one selfie each day the rest of this week, Ashley. I bet you will find it to be fun and entertaining too! :D

Maybe you can make a matching face on you to the face you make on your kids' lunches. :) It would be fun to see a split screen of that!

Just play and have fun!
And Alissa, I LOVE all the pics with you and your mom too. You guys are adorable together!

You know I have been thinking about this all week. If I died tomorrow, my kids-step kids and grandkiddos would have photos of me at many stages and ages. That makes me happy. I have 3 photos of my Dad. He died when I was 22. He has been gone for more than half my life and I wish I had more photos of him throughout his life.

I've been enjoying seeing your selfies on IG and on Facebook ladies...I find that I will take one here and there but tend not to post them or will only the post ones that I take with Zoey in the frame as well. For some reason I feel self conscious about sharing them and having women that I see irl think I'm weird or self absorbed too. Isn't it silly that I think that way? Sometimes I wish I had a Facebook profile page just where I was friends with my lovely scrappy friends who I know would understand! ;)

This thread is so fun. I do take them from time to time. After reading it, I finally posted one to IG that I took quickly at work. You can fix a lot with cropping and filters. I changed that one to black and white and I like the result!
