Google maps
I just recently realized that our street and our house is to be found on Google Maps. It's pretty amazing that it's possible to "walk" down our street and the neighbourhood!
Can you find your house too?
If you go to google maps and type "Hallonstigen 15 strangnas sweden" it should show up. It's a red house with a front yard that could have been taken care of in a better way.
It says that the photos were taken in August 2011. I really had no idea.
Right now that big cherry tree is in full blossom and it's so, so beautiful.

Re: Google maps
oh wow! I went to Sweden today!
I have done this and looked at my house, but I have never thought to share it with my internet friends.
You can only see my roof, I can't make it walk me around the neighborhood like yours. but if you want to see my roof maybe you can figure out how to walk my streets!

Re: Google maps
Yes, I've used this feature. When I was looking for a place to rent in Portland, I used it all the time as I could 'walk' around the neighborhood. It was really helpful. Off to see your house, Anna.
What a nice house! Looks like it was really stormy the day they took the photo.

Really nice house, Anna! Love the way your neighbourhood looks. Reminds me of the wonderful little town my great aunt lived in.

Re: Google maps
I can find my house eventually. But they changed the street addresses here a few years ago and apparently Googlemaps hasn't updated. But it did get me a few houses down and I just used the walking feature to go down the street to stand in front of my own home

It's quite fun, isn't it Ally? I am glad they avoided taking photos looking straight into my living room, though.
Su, thanks for sharing!

That is so cool! I use google maps to scope the neighborhood before I go out of town!

Re: Google maps
Anna, I love you house.
Your road looks so nice and quiet.
Is that a big river near you?
Ours looks so untidy. It was taken quite some time ago before we'd tidies all the front garden and it looks so over grown.

Re: Google maps
I looked up the house I grew up in and took a 'walk' around the old neighbourhood. It's a little surprising how little has changed on my street. A couple of houses have been replaced by new houses, a couple have been renovated, but most have stayed more or less the same. My old friend's house now has palm trees in the front yard - seems strange for Vancouver.

Oh, I tried checking out one of the places where I lived as a kid, but unfortunately I can't get all the way to the house in the "walking mode". It would have been fun too see what it looks like now!

Our little town is situated right next to "Mälaren" - a large lake that actually goes all the way too Stockholm and out in the Baltic Sea. It's the third-largest lake in Sweden. There are lots of islands in the lake and there's this rather narrow passage going past Strängnäs, so I see why it looks like a river. If you look at Strängnäs at Google Maps and zoom out, you can see that it's really a lake.

It's about a 30 minutes walk to get to the lake from our house. Before we bought the house we lived in an appartment "down town" only minutes away and we often went for walks along the lake. It doesn't happen quite as often anymore. But it's nice to have the lake nearby.

Re: Google maps
Anna, I've just visited your house. It looks nice.
You can visit my house at Dalvagen 3, Pitea, Sweden
But I have to warn you all, the photo was taken in october 2009, when we changed windows in the house, and before we did a make over in the front yard. So, it was a mess back then.

Re: Google maps
How fun to see your house Ami!
I'm curious about the area on the other side of the road, with the small houses? At first I thought they looked really tiny, like camping cottages or something, but now I'm not sure. Perhaps they are small houses, but not that tiny?

Re: Google maps
The small houses were build for old people (pensionärsbostäder) with just one room, a toilet and a small cooking kitchen. The total area is around 30 sqm. Smaller than my livingroom, so they're tiny to me.

Re: Google maps
That was kind of scary - it must have been taken in the past couple weeks but it's only a satellite view. No street views or neighborhood views for my small little town
